This painting was inspired by a moment after a long hike through the mountains in Scotland. We had finally stopped beside the loch when this incredible cloud began to move across the landscape.
Parts of the land were suddenly illuminated by breaks of light, while everything around them seemed to disappear into the approaching storm. There was something beautiful about that contrast, one part of the landscape glowing while another was being swallowed by the weather.
After walking for so long, it felt particularly special to simply stop and watch it happen. The landscape seemed to change from one minute to the next, with the light appearing and disappearing as the cloud moved across the loch.
Created using oil paint and marble dust, the painting explores that fleeting meeting of light, weather and landscape, and the moments in nature that seem to arrive just when you finally have time to notice them.
