This painting was inspired by a walk with a friend through a large open field, when the sky began to break and light came through the clouds across the landscape.
There was something incredibly fresh about the scene. The greens of the field, the open countryside and the softness of the light gave everything a sense of calm and newness. It reminded me of the British countryside at its freshest, when the landscape feels particularly alive and full of possibility.
Created using oil paint and marble dust, the textured surface allows the greens and changing sky to build and break across the painting. The light is gentle rather than dramatic, emerging quietly through the clouds and bringing a warmth to the landscape beneath.
